Understanding Sun Exposure: Direct vs. Indirect UV Rays
Many people believe they’re safe from UV damage as long as they’re not directly in the sun. But indirect sun exposure counts too, and it’s easy to miss because we often don’t realize it’s happening.
Direct Sun Exposure
Think of these as the obvious moments:
- Lying on the beach
- Walking in open sunlight
- Sitting at an outdoor café
- Playing sports outside
- Gardening in your backyard
Indirect Sun Exposure
These are the sneaky moments when UV rays still reach you:
- Sitting in the shade, as UV rays bounce off the surfaces around you
- Driving your car: research found that front windshields blocked about 96% of UVA rays on average, while side windows blocked only about 71%
- Under a beach umbrella, as dry sand reflects about 15% of UV rays
- On a cloudy day, as up to 80% of UV rays can pass through light clouds
- Near water and in the city, where surfaces reflect UV back at you
The Reflection Factor
Different surfaces reflect varying amounts of UV radiation:
- Fresh snow: up to 80%
- Sea foam: about 25%
- Dry beach sand: about 15%
- Water: about 10%
- Grass: up to 3%
This means UV can reach you from above and below at the same time. On fresh snow, your exposure can almost double.
