Medical Considerations: Sun Protection for Special Health Conditions

Important Note:
Always consult your healthcare provider about specific sun protection needs for your medical condition. This guide provides general information only.

This information is educational only. Individual medical conditions require personalized medical advice and treatment plans.

Medications & Sun Sensitivity

According to the FDA,Some medicines contain ingredients that may cause photosensitivity -- a chemically induced change in the skin. Photosensitivity makes a person sensitive to sunlight and can cause sunburn-like symptoms, a rash or other unwanted side effects.

Common Photosensitizing Medications (here is the detailed list from the FDA):

  • Antibiotics (tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones)

  • Retinoids

  • Diuretics

  • Some diabetes medications

  • Cholesterol-lowering drugs

Skin conditions/ autoimmune conditions:

Lupus (Systemic & Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus) – UV rays can trigger severe skin flare-ups.

Vitiligo, sunburns can increase depigmentation and sensitivity, you can find more information here

Rosacea – Sun exposure worsens redness and inflammation.

Psoriasis – UV rays can sometimes help, but excessive exposure can cause burns and worsen symptoms.

Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis) – UV exposure can trigger flare-ups in some individuals.

Skin Cancer (Melanoma, Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma) – UV exposure is a major risk factor.

Post-Procedure Care:
You should protect yourself against UV sun rays after some of those procedures:

  • Post-laser hair removal, sun exposure should be limited to limit possible side effect.

  • Scar protection as the skin can easily burn and be inflamed which can turn into hyperpigmentation.

  • Newly tattooed skin is often inflamed from the tiny pricks from the tattoo needle so will require additional protection
